Aesthetic of Work
Ancient Greek philosophers identified 3 ideals: truth, good, and beauty. Chinese add in the 4th: abundance.
Science is dedicated to pursuit of truth, and technology to its application. Ethics and morality, to pursuit of the good, Aesthetic to beauty, and Economics to abundance.
Although management or economics mainly to pursue abundance, working without truth, good & beauty would be suffering.
Management should embrace technology, guided by ethical values, & in aesthetic way. How?
Aesthetic is related to creation & re-creation. Work should be creative to innovate something new. This could happen when company re-fresh mind, heart & body of her employees, it is promoting fun & enjoyment.
The Concept of Corporation
Corporation, derived from corpus, means body – thus a company actually is an organism not a machine. As Peter Drucker said, profit came to be viewed as oxygen is for a human being: necessary for its survival but not the reason for it.
The CEO became the head of the firm and management, its brain. Department were thought of much as bodily organs and workers, as cells. Their quality of work life became major concerns that were reflected in labor legislation and contracts. The environment was viewed as a purposeless self-renewing source of resources and a receptacle for waste. By this view, profit and growth is a means of ‘maximizing human potential’, to serve others and GOD. Employees and business owners are partners who work together in a corporation which purpose is to produce and distribute wealth, primarily by employment.
